On this day, at the Sala Giunta Nuova of the Municipality of Genoa, in the presence of the highest civil and sporting institutions of the city and region, the COMITATO GENOVA 2026 Asd has officially presented the Orienteering World Cup 2024 - Orienteering World Cup 2024, the Italian leg of the world circuit, which will take place in Genoa (Voltri and Nervi) from 27th May to 2nd June, and to which more than 300 participants representing 29 national teams, also non-European, have already registered. The Orienteering World Cup 2024 - Orienteering World Cup 2024 is promoted within the events of Genoa 2024 European Capital of Sport and will be broadcasted by SVT (Sweden), YLE (Finland), CzTV (Czech Republic) and Tv8 Mont Blanc (France), reaching an expected total audience of 3.5 million viewers, in addition to the broadcasts available on IOF TV for the worldwide audience.
The Orienteering World Cup 2024 is the most eagerly awaited event of the year for a sports movement that in Italy counts more than 10,000 practitioners (160 clubs affiliated to FISO) and over 300. 000 in the world, for a circuit that every year organises the World Orienteering Week, which takes place in 63 NATIONS with 100,952 participants, in addition to the 'Elite' events: the World Championships - which Genoa will host in 2026, the European Championships and the World Cup races, as well as those on the National calendars. Many collateral events were planned by the organisers, which Gianluca Carbone - Event Manager of the Italian stage presented in the presence of Henrik Eliasson (Sweden) C.E.O. of the International Federation (I.O.F.), Sergio Anesi - President of F.I.S.O., and also Elis Angeli - Orienteering Folgore Pisa, athlete of the Italian National Team. Welcoming the international guests who came to Genoa for the presentation were the main civil and sporting authorities of Genoa and the Liguria Region, proud of the sporting and also tourist and media importance of the Orienteering World Cup 2024 - Orienteering World Cup 2024: the Councillor for Sport of the Municipality - Alessandra Bianchi, the Councillor for Sport of the Liguria Region - Simona Ferro, the Vice-President of the Regional Council - Armando Sanna, the President of C. O.N.I. Liguria - Antonio Micillo, the Head of Sport and Health Liguria - Michela Carfagna, as well as the councillors of the two parts of the city that will be most directly involved in the June 2024 event: the Councillor for Sport of the Municipality VII - Paola Pesce Maineri and the Councillor of. To the Sport of the Municipality IX Levante - Federica Minarelli.
Strictly secret the routes and the areas destined for the competition fields that from 27 May to 2 June will bring the 29 national teams with the best athletes on the planet to Genoa! Orienteering is in fact a sport that is practised in an environment unknown to the competitors, using a map and a compass to locate a series of checkpoints in a given order and in the shortest possible time. It takes place in the city or in the forest (on foot, by bike or on skis) and is a zero-impact discipline. (No need to build facilities to practice it). The team of the GENOVA 2026 Asd COMMITTEE, specially set up for the organisation of the 2024 Orienteering World Cup and in view of the 2026 World Championships, is impressive. From a technical point of view, a team coordinated by the Genoese Asd Amatori, which has, however, involved the best national experts since the recent Italian Championships. From an organisational and communication point of view, the assistance of the CSI Genoa is important, also thanks to the Altum Park outdoor multi-sports centre in San Desiderio, where orienteering is a sporting-environmental discipline that has been taught and practised for years and where the Italian National Team will be based during the entire competition period.
INFORMATION ON RACES and TV TRANSMISSIONS: The Genoese leg of the Orienteering World Cup 2024 is currently (early April 2024) expecting more than 300 entries representing 29 national teams, also from outside Europe. The Italian team will consist of 13 athletes and 3 technicians. The event will consist of two trials, Saturday 1 June with the individual trial in Voltri and Sunday 2 June with the relay trial (mixed male and female) in Nervi. On Saturday the first competitors will start at 11:30 a.m., with one-minute intervals until 3 p.m. By 15:30 the prize-giving ceremony at Piazza Caduti Partigiani Voltri. On Sunday at the Nervi Parks at 15:40 the launch of the first fractionists (of four) of the 55 relays (some nations may register two or more). The race will end with the prize-giving ceremony inside the parks at 17:15. A team of around 150 technicians from all over Italy will be working on the organisation of the event.
The type of competition is what the International Federation (I.O.F.) defines as 'Sprint', i.e. with very fast trials, where the eye and decision-making speed must travel at the same pace as the legs; trials that take place in urban settings and are completed within a quarter of an hour. Television will always broadcast images of the 'heart' of the city, with views of the two city extremes sure to be an excellent promotional postcard. The competition weekend will be preceded by training sessions organised in Savona, Camogli, Recco, Bolzaneto and Pegli, so we will host all the national teams for the entire week. The impact on the city will go beyond that brought directly by the participants and the television promotion, because from Friday 31 the 'Three Days of Apennines' will attract another 500-700 competitors who will be able to combine a sporting experience in the hills of the hinterland with watching the World Cup races. Participation in the Three Days is open to everyone, even those who want to try it for the first time, and on the 31st in the Praglia stage there will also be a trial open to the participation of differently abled competitors.
